Buy Fresh Buy Local – Green Country

Buy Fresh Oklahoma label

Green Country locavores can now check out the 2010 Local Food Guide for Green Country to find fresh locally-grown food in their community.  The Food Guide lists farmers’ markets and well over 80 different farms and ranches throughout northeastern Oklahoma, making it easier to Buy Fresh Buy Local.

Local food shoppers can find farmers and ranchers with fresh produce, berries, meats, eggs, dairy products, livestock, nuts, honey, herbs, plants, flowers and more.  Also included are listings of pick your own farms, family-owned grocers, farm stores, caterers, restaurants and other venues featuring locally-grown food.

Other sources in the Food Guide include Community Gardens and the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, where customer members can order a wide variety of good eats online, directly from farmers and ranchers. The Guide also contains useful information about the seasonal availability of locally-produced foods in northeast Oklahoma.

Hard copies of the Local Food Guide can be found inside the June issue of The Current, a free alternative source for news and views about arts, entertainment and lifestyle choices in northeastern OK.  Follow the link for a list of news stand locations in your area.

The Food Guide will also be available for pick-up at library branches, county extension offices, local health departments and other places within the Tulsa area and throughout Green Country.  If you have a spot where food guides could be placed, please contact Rita Scott (see her info at the bottom of this page).

As the first Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter in Oklahoma, BFBL-Green Country has had some major accomplishments since its inception in the spring of 2007, such as
successfully applying for a USDA Community Food Project grant; establishing the first annual Local Food Week in OK; printing and distributing thousands of farmers’ market and local food guides; and assisting with the formation of at least 6 new farmers’ markets in Green Country.

Coordinated by Sustainable Green Country, a local chapter of the OK Sustainability Network, BFBL- Green Country and its team of volunteers, along with partners such as Tulsa County OSU Cooperative Extension and the Indian Health Care Resource Center is making it easier for individuals, families and businesses in Green Country to find and support local food and farms, while making healthy food choices.

Contributions of time, money and other resources are always needed to allow this important work to continue and to expand.
