Land Legacy, a Tulsa-based nonprofit conservation organization, announced the winners of several preservation awards at its first fundraiser, Legacy Ranch, which introduced the public to the mission of Land Legacy in a family entertainment setting.
Dr. Jim Horne, president and CEO of the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture, was awarded the Don Walker Conservation Leadership Award. The Kerr Center is a non-profit educational foundation headquartered in Poteau.
Horne has guided his organization in the development of sustainable agriculture research and educational resources.
In addition to his position at the Kerr Center, Horne has also served as chairman of the Southern Region Council for the US DA’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program and was a member of the Scoping Task force on Sustainable Agriculture for the President’s Council on Sustainable Development.
The award is named for Land Legacy’s current and founding board president, Don Walker. Other awardees were Ken Greenwood, Sustainable Tulsa and Lindsay Perkins.
The event was held at the Osage Ranch Club, where guests enjoyed skeet shooting, fishing, hayrides, garden clinics, a hot air balloon glow and live entertainment set against the Tulsa skyline.
Celebrating its 8th year in Oklahoma, Land Legacy continues to improve the quality of life in Oklahoma through the conservation of urban and rural landscapes.
Land Legacy’s work in the community includes urban parks and trails, farm and ranch preservation and water quality protection. In addition, Land Legacy works with public agencies and other conservation organizations to establish long-term conservation goals and programs.
The Legacy Ranch event was the first fundraiser of its kind for Land Legacy, said executive director Robert Gregory.
“Last weekend’s event is a great example of the outreach we want to continue with the Tulsa community,” he commented.
“Land Legacy would be nothing without the people who support it. Hosting events like the day at Legacy Ranch helps us to engage with Oklahomans, show them what our mission means to them, and ultimately what it means for their future.
