Organic Foods
What do we need to know about them?
What are organic foods?
The Oxford American dictionary describes the word organic as "of or
formed from living things." But consumers generally define organic foods
as those produced naturally, without the use of chemicals, drugs, or factory
farm techniques.
How are organic foods produced?
Organic food production is based on a system of farming that maintains and
replenishes the fertility of the soil. Some pesticides and fertilizers are
allowed, as long as they are on the National List of Approved products.
Is organic food production regulated?
In order to be certified "organic" producers must in addition to
the site inspections, submit and follow an organic production plan, meet strict
record keeping requirements, and be subject to residue testing on products.
Once certified, these operations may affix a label on their product stating
that it "Meets USDA Organic Requirements." It will be illegal for
anyone to use the word "organic" on a product if it does not meet
the standards set in the laws and regulations.
The new National Organic Program Standards become effective from April 21,
2001. All products currently labeled as "organic" have 18 months
from the effective date of the rule to be compliant with the new standards.
What do the new standards say?
The labeling requirements of the new program apply to raw, fresh produce
and processed foods that contain organic ingredients. Foods that are sold,
labeled or represented as organic will have to be produced and processed in
accordance with these standards. As per the new standards, starting from October
21, 2002, once certified, the USDA organic seal will be placed on the product.
When can food be labeled 100% organic?
- If they are produced on land managed in accordance to the standards for
three consecutive preceding years.
- If the animals used for meat, eggs, and other animal products are raised
on organic feed.
- If they are produced through methods not involving genetic engineering,
sewage sludge, or ionizing radiation.- If the organically raised animals have
access to the outdoors.
- If care is taken to prevent the commingling of organic products with the
non organic products.
